Great Eastern Hotel, Kolkata

Has anyone stayed in the Great Eastern hotel in Kolkata recently? We%26#39;re looking to stay for a few days in February, and so many hotels get bad reviews except the really expensive ones. Any suggestions for up to US$100 per night?

Hi,

The GE was closed down quite a while ago for renovation. It is scheduled to re-open sometime this year under new management.

If you want to stay in Chowringee area, you could try the Peerless Inn. You could also try the Astor hotel.

Unfortunately, $ 100 doesn%26#39;t get you much these days with the strong Indian Rupee.

If you don%26#39;t have a problem living in an aged hotel, you could try the Fairlawn.

Thanks for your replies. I%26#39;m going to try the Astor, but the Fairlawn is getting some really bad reviews these days as regards cleanliness, which is our main priority. Is the Peerless a clean one?

Peerless hotel is not exactly flawless, but overall they should have some standards in regard to cleanliness. I have not been to the Peerless hotel in a while, but last time I saw the rooms they were clean.

I just checked and the Peerless may not be in your price range of 100 USD.

You should try the Astor or the Samilton. Take Deluxe rooms in either.

Thanks very much Brave1. I%26#39;m now booked into the Astor.

I don%26#39;t suppose you (or anyone else) can recommend a mid-range place in Bhubaneswar or Puri can you? Or top end if need be - we need clean and comfortable, not necessarily luxurious; lack of cockroaches is totally essential or my wife will kill me!!

In Bhubaneshwar, try the Ginger hotel (low cost option of the Taj group) or if you want to go high budget the Trident Hilton is just across the street from the Ginger.

In Puri, the Mayfair is a good but fairly expensive option. There is also the Hans coco palms, but its also not cheap. But a cheap hotel in Puri can be an option you will regret. In all my visits to Puri, I have stayed at either of the above hotels or at the Sterling resort (I am a timeshare member).

If I remember correct the Mayfair in Bhubaneshwar is also supposed to be a good place. I havent stayed there though..

Mayfair at Bhubaneshwar is nice Gjo, but quite expensive. Certainly not in the category of mid-budget hotels.

Actually there are 4 hotels in the Nayapally area right next and opposite to each other. I will rank them in descending order by price and quality.

1. Trident Hilton

2. Mayfair

3. Ginger Hotel (Taj Group)

4. Swosti Plaza. (Costs the same or more than Ginger hotel but I would rank lower as per cleanliness standards.)

That%26#39;s really helpful, thanks to both of you. I can start looking forward to the trip now! I%26#39;m really looking forward to seeing Konak, and everything else that Bhubaneswar has to offer. Kolkata will be great too, but a lot more frenetic I assume. After travelling in South East Asia where everything is so laid back I was getting a bit nervous about returning to India after nearly 20 years, it will have changed so much.
