Darjeeling OR Dharamsala?

Has anyone been to Darjeeling and Dharamsala? We are going to India in early April 08, and want to visit an area in the Himalayan foothills, we can only go to one place, what would you choose?

Darjeeling OR Dharamsala?

If you are based in or are travelling via Delhi, I would choose Dharamsala. Darjeeling is of course more scenic and more popular, but it would mean you have to travel to Kolkata / Eastern Part of India. There are direct flights from Delhi-Bagdogra airport though, if you want to fly.

Why don%26#39;t you have a browse through the Darjeeling forum ?

Darjeeling OR Dharamsala?

I have been to both the places. Dharamshala is nestled at the foot of the mighty Dauladhar range and offers a good near view of the snow-clad peaks such as the Kailash peak. However, this hill station is at a lower altitude and it gets very warm during the summer (we had been there in mid-April). Theres also nothing much to see here except monasteries, temples though you could go trekking up the hills to Dharamkhot or further up to the snow line. No motorable roads to those points.

Darjeeling on other hand is situated much higher, and is cool during summers also. It offers views of the Kanchenjunga in the distance (if you are lucky weather-wise.. I wasnt !) among other rolling hills of the eastern himalayas. Lots of sight-seeing options here both on foot and on wheels.. especially if you proceed into interiors of sikkim

I would vote for Darjeeling
