Airport and currency questions

Taking our first trip to Goa next month - staying at Dona Sylvia.

I had intended on getting Rupees but I read somewhere on here that we cannot take them into the country - is this correct? I also heard the same thing about Morocco regarding the Dirham but it was perfectly fine (we couldn%26#39;t bring it back out though! lol!) We find taking local currency so much easier and never use travellers cheques.

Also, what facilities are available at Dabolim - namely places to eat/drink or shop.

Many thanks!

Airport and currency questions

You cannot take rupees in and you cannot buy them in the UK. There is a currency exchange at the airport but the rate is not good, best to wait until you get to your resort. You can tip at the airport with pound coins. No cafes at arrivals. On departure they will tell you that you cant take rupees out but its best to take some through for the cafe in departures because they fleece you if you pay in any currency other than rupees. Its not really a cafe just a kiosk, never had anything but coffee there but it looks fine. Duty free doesnt sell much other than alcohol and cigarettes. If you dont want to take travellers cheques, is a good idea to open a Nationwide Flex account, they dont charge for ATM withdrawals i believe. We always take the cheques and have no problem, plenty of places to cash them and if you use a place regularly they dont require you to keep taking your passport along.

Airport and currency questions

Get yoururrency there take pounds cash or sterling. Yuo get a better rate for cash. If you are going on the coach to your hotel wait until you get there to change your money. You get a better rate outside of the hotel in the change shops they usually advertise there rates outside. If you are going by taxi see how much the fare is ask the driver to stop at a money changer near to your hotel. There is a ';window'; duty free side which sell hot and cold drinks rolls pizza slices and some great samosas enough just to keep you going. (keep some rupees for your purchases otherwise you pay in sterling and get the change back in rupees

Hi It is possable to take rupees into Goa but not bring them out they can be bought at any high street travel agent with a few days notice. You can also change money at the airport the desk is in arrivals its near the exit after collecting cases someone will give you an information sheet. hope this helps. Jan

Other people have said that you can get rupees in the UK as well. I%26#39;ve never tried as I know it%26#39;s a closed currency and therefore theoretically not available anywhere outside India. We usually bring some rupees home on the grounds that we%26#39;ll be using them next time and so far we%26#39;ve never been stopped. Someone at security asked us once what we were going to do with them and we said bring them back again, so he shrugged and just let us through.

Agree with London-Goa girl. Dragonfli, do NOT tip with pound coins, Goa is not London!! This amount of tipping is responsible for harassment from porters at Dabolim. They only push your cases 10 mtrs from the airport!!!Much easier to take a few rupees from your previous holiday back with you, and use them for tipping(if you have to), next time you go.

Thanks everyone.

I spoke to the woman in our local Tesco Bureaux de Change about Rupees and she said it takes about 3 days for her to get them in.

I%26#39;m guessing then that it%26#39;s like the Moroccan Dirham - %26#39;a closed currency%26#39; (but not really!)

I%26#39;ll take another trip to our local Tesco and ask her again. If she can get them then I%26#39;ll order but if not then I%26#39;ll use my Nationwide account and withdraw from the ATM at Cavelossim.

Thanks all!

Exchange rate is dreadful if you get them in England. I have just had a good idea for all the people going to Goa for the first time who do not have any rupees for tips at the airport! Are there any other Goan fanatics who have been there many times before, who come back with rupees, who for the sake of a stamp and what a few rupees are worth be prepared to send some small change to new Goa visitors? I am quite prepared to start the ball rolling, so globetrotters if you want to pm me your address i will send you some small change in rupees.

OOHHPS.Bad idea according to my nephew, the policeman. he said it could lead to people getting addresses of people away on holiday and giving an open invitation to burglars.so forget that idea. sorry!!

Trimerond I dont tip anyone at the airport, I am perfectly capable of carrying my own case. I do tip the room boy who carries my bags up to the room which is beyond me if its up several flights of stairs and get me any extras like additional pillows etc., this ensures i am well looked after during my stay.

hi

another idea,if you have indian friends/neighbours

in this country,or an indian restaurant you use

regularly, see if you can get some off them, you only

need a couple of hundred to start, bring some back to

repay when you return home.
