    Future visit

I am visiting Bangalore in June and wish to learn to fly (for pleasure)or master horse riding, go rock climbing (even indoors) and learn how to give massage and/or learn yoga/meditation. I am willing to pay for private tuition if no schools exist. Any one with information, please.

    Future visit

    Hi jafferrajpar,

I will you suggest to visit a Bangalore hotel directory http://www.bangalorehotels.org.uk/ and read the profile of hotels and check the name of the hotels providing indoor rock climbing and massage/ yoga services.

    Happy Journey to Bangalore

    Hotel Hari International

Any thoughts on this hotel? Anyone stayed recently? It is supposed to be new.

    Hotel Hari International

BEWARE! DANGER! In the HOTEL HARI INTERNATIONAL next to the receptionist desk is located the tour agency (Sudha Tours %26amp; Travels) that organizes tours round Bangalore and Karnataka. There works a lady and a tour agent named N.Vijay Kumar. Please, never ever deal with these people!!! I have paid them for the two-person tour round Karnataka plus Goa for 10 nights, 9 days. I鈥檝e paid them 1500$ for the hotel reservation, plus 1000$ for the car with a driver, including parking and Goa cross boarder fee. As a result, no single hotel was the one we planned to stay at and meant it to be reserved! All of them turned out to be second-rate hotels, inexpressibly dirty, with rats and cockroaches. We had to pay Goa cross boarder fee (something round 1400 rupee) and for parking ourselves, for the driver was provided with a kind of a midget sum of money and the tour agent himself, when we contacted with him on the phone, yelled and asserted that these expenses were not included. Besides, we had to pay for the hotel in Panjim for the driver just left us there despite the fact that he must have stayed at his working place for another day. All in all, NEVER EVER deal with a tour agency in Hari hotel, though the hotel itself is very nice.

    Goa in August?

Can%26#39;t wait to get back to Goa, and the school summer holiday is probably the next opportunity to get away.

Obviously it is rainy season, but I%26#39;ve heard mixed reports on what the situation is actually like, even locals can%26#39;t agree - some say it is continuously rainy and all the roads are blocked, while others say it should be fine, there will still be some sunshine, though a bit quiet.

I%26#39;d like some opinions from people who either live there or have been in August, rather than hearsay.

    Goa in August?

August for me is a great time to come, yeah it%26#39;s still raining, when it rains it rains hard and the last 3 years have been pretty mixed, sometimes there%26#39;s a big sharp blast of rain, others it goes on for a bit. Generally though August, especially later August is when the gaps in the rain become longer and the sun dries the rain up quicker. Roads are usally OK, unless they%26#39;re in a real dip. The slums last year had a nice river running thrugh them (they were pretty the lowest point, but the roads (which are normally bult up a bit are fine.

Goa is beautiful and if you%26#39;re not looking for a beach holiday there%26#39;s stil so much colour and vibrance about the place..

    Hope that helps

    Rob

    Goa in August?

    Poipleshadow,

Thanks for the info - Sounds OK.

    Any more out there?

Earliest i have been was the end of September, it did rain, only occasionally but it was very heavy when it did, sea was pretty rough, it was several years ago so was much quieter then anyway, we were on the first flight out for the season and only a few hotels were open, no beach shacks up. Went to the waterfalls that year and the road was only just passable and pretty scary. As i say it was a few years ago and things may have changed regarding when the hotels and shacks are running.

I go out on my pushbike most days all thru monsoon and only occasionally get wet, I know where to take shelter or pop into a bar for half an hour and rain stops, and August is more showers than rain and plenty of hazey sunshine, tends to rain more late evening and when you sleep mornings I get out on bike so nothing stops me from getting around and the greenery and flowers are in full bloom and quiter roads especially the beach belt, just enjoy there is something for everyone and still quite a few restaurants that stay open all season with reduced monsoon prices.

Normally most of the Bank%26#39;s ATM are accepting Visa Electron

do the atm machines accept electron?

Hi I am almost sure the ICIC ATM at Kovalam junction accepts electron amongst others.

I will try to confirm this shortly when we use the ATM.

    thanks

    Hi Jimi

The ICIC ATM accepts visa electron.

    Hope this helps

I tried to use debit visa cards in atm%26#39;s at kovalam junction but no joy. had to use money changers at kov beach

Did you tell your bank you were going away? I did and could use the machines, my husband didn%26#39;t and had to phone the bank. You can understand them blocking the account when it suddenly starts getting used for cash in India.

yep, we told lloyds before we left when buying travellers cheques and rupees. they said they are unable to prevent cards being blocked and to phone from india if it did. as we could use our cards with money changers it wasn%26#39;t a problem.

Hi! Just returned from Kovalam and had no problem using Visa Electron. We used two ATM%26#39;s at the junction. You can also use your card at money changer near lighthouse.

We also used Axis bank in Trivandrum.

    Enjoy your hols!

    Hi

The 2 ATM%26#39;s located at Kovalam Junction take most cards but cannot remember if they take Electron.

If you have any problems with any palstic cards then visit Lenic of Cosmic travel, located behind Palm Restuarant on Lighthouse Beach. Don%26#39;t get confused with COSMOS at the bottom of the hill.

Lenic can accept and change all plastic cards and would be willing to help.

  • North Goa - sterling or travellers cheques?

First time in Goa are we better to take sterling or sterling travellers cheques?

North Goa - sterling or travellers cheques?

Hi - I always take sterling travellers cheques to Goa. Changed them up in a shop in Calangute last year getting a good rate and had no problems at all.

    Malaria Tablets

I have been advised these can be bought more cheaply in Goa.

Flying out on 20 March to Varca (South) does anyone know where the pharmacy is to buy anti malaria tablets?

There is three of us travelling so I have bought one box from Boots to keep us going until we get to Goa.

    Can%26#39;t wait!!

Anyone else flying out on the 3.30 pm Monarch flight from Manchester?

    Malaria Tablets

Yes I%26#39;m flying out of that flight too...there will be 5 of us in total..

Pretty much any chemist will have malaria tabs, I%26#39;ve bought them from Goa before.

Never been to Varca, so I don%26#39;t know where the chemist will be, but in the north they are usually every few hundred yards or so!

    Malaria Tablets

I don%26#39;t know Varca either, but I do know that the pharmacy in Colva doesn%26#39;t stock both of the anti-malarials - only one. If I want to buy them there, I have to go into Margao. You could buy them on the internet from Travelpharm or somewhere which is much cheaper than Boots.

You can get Chloroquine and Proguanil in Cavellossim

    Any good golf in Hyderabad?

I%26#39;m looking for the best golf course available in Hyd. Any recommendations? Also what are the average green fees? Thanks.

    Any good golf in Hyderabad?

There are two Golf Courses that i know about.. One is managed by the Army and is called Bolaram Golf Course.. and believe me its not worth the effort.. There is one more Golf Course, near the Golconda Fort, called as Hyderabad Golf Course, and i personally liked it. Though it is just a 3 hole at the moment.

Emaar Group is building an 18 hole Golf Course, but that will take about 3 years.. so till that time.. i suggest Hyderabad Golf Course.

    Any good golf in Hyderabad?

Green fees are not more than about Rs 200-250 and caddy costs about Rs 100. The course is flat, the greens are awful, but the setting, inside an army camp is not too bad. There is a smallish clubhouse. There are a couple of roads that criss cross the course in two or three places though they are fenced off, and you have to take tee shots to cross those obstacles.

Hyderabad has a problem on account of the rocky soil and relative lack of water, so in summer it does get difficult to maintain a golf course. There%26#39;s been talk about an international class golf course coming up in Hyderabad for the last decade, but nothing has come yet.

The phone number is AFAIK, 2786-1943.

Sorry I should have added -the one I described is the 18 hole army course at Bolaram, near Secunderabad.

Definitely check out the golf course near Golconda- amazing views of the fort. Prices are on the site as well.

colonial style hotel with garden/pool - not Taj can't afford

looked at shelleys - does it have gardens you can sit our and relax in

any other suggestions? ideal is with pool so we can chill out if need be

thanks - i seem to be drawing a blank

colonial style hotel with garden/pool - not Taj can't afford

Not sure if you are aware but Bombay is one of the more exp cities in the world hotel wise so hoping for a low budget hotel like you described seems hard.

There is a club in south bombay called the breach candy club that lets foriegners in who are not members by show of their passport and a nominal fee say 200RS... I need to double check if this rule still applies since it has been a while since I went there but their pools (indoor and outdoor) are some of the nicest in the city and they have a bar and all day snack service with food and beverage that is quite cheap.

Will recheck on this and post back here.

    taxi prices

we have heard that the taxi prices have gone up quite a bit ths year can anyone confirm this as in the past we have payed around fifteen to twenty pounds for the day

    taxi prices

I was in Candolim in Feb this year and paid 700 rupees for a full day out visiting the northern beaches (Mandrem, Morjim etc.). Less than £10. Taxis do tend to be cheekily asking more but decent deals are still there to be had with some haggling.

    taxi prices

In february we travelled from Calangute to Ponda in the south visiting the spice plantation and the elephant rides, the taxi for the day cost us 700 rupees.

Taxi prices were a little higher in November. At Christmas they raised slightly and were more expensive really late at night but not that much difference. £20.00 seems a little steep for a whole day and i dont expect you would pay that anyway i WOULD SAY 1100.00 rups for the day. Bargain with them.

I noticed an increase in taxi prices and I was there in last month. The time before that was Feb. 2006 and I could see an increase. However, I think you just still need to barter with the drivers.

    Hi

Some taxi drivers have adopted an idear from a foreign land of doubling fares after midnight (because its what you people have to pay at home)

Many, infact the vast majority refuse to follow the fare prices per km which are government regulated and virtually double it.Rickshaws are also starting to try to charge taxi prices. Why??? because the tourist not being aware of what the true pices should be pays up and then tips on top.

800 rps for a full day is more than an adequate price to pay.

Out of season they will not get any thing like that, locals would rather walk or catch the bus than pay over the oficial prices.

Absolutely agree Bruahy. We were in Mumbai for the day last Thursday and paid 40 rps for a tuk tuk trip that would cost around 150 or more in Goa.

The tuk tuks have meters too.

travel time and distance hyatt to city center

i%26#39;m thinking of staying at the hyatt hotel in kolkata.

it%26#39;s quite far out of the city, but how far - km or miles - is it to the city center? how much is approx. the cost of a taxi?

is the metro nearby - what about dum dum train station? would it be feasible to take a taxi to the station and then on with the metro?

    thanks for the information!

travel time and distance hyatt to city center

    Hi,

Hyatt is not really very far from the city. In moderate traffic, it will take you about 30 min by taxi to reach Chowringee/Park Street and it will cost you about Rs 80-100. ($2-3)

The Metro is not nearby. Dum Dum station is further away from the Hyatt than Park Street is. It will be more convenient for you to use Taxis. If you want to use the Metro service, stay at the Park or Oberoi Grand instead. But trust me, you will have no problem with taxis. Just check the meter when you get on and pay by the chart they carry with them.

For things to see and do in Kolkata, just browse through the older posts. Plenty of information already discussed.

2-3 days is enough for Kolkata. Spend two nights in Kol, and take a trip to Darjeeling instead. For more details on that, just see the Darjeeling forum.

  • travellers cheques

hello! wondered if anyone could help, i go to Goa on Saturday and ive left it a little too late to open a nationwide flexiaccount, so now im thinking of travellers cheques, where am i best getting these from and is it the next best thing? im worried as between me and my boyfriend we%26#39;re taking £1000 so is it the safest option with such a large amount of money? any feedback appreciated!

    travellers cheques

I%26#39;d probably take a mixture of cash and travellers cheques (in sterling). You can also use other cashcards in the ATMs in Goa - it doesn%26#39;t have to be a Nationwide one, just that Nationwide gives you the best rates.

    travellers cheques

thankyou for that! i was told Nationwide dont charge for withdrawals abroad, thats why we were going to open the account, do you know at all what the average charge is for using cashcards abroad?

Im tempted to take maybe £500 travellers cheques and £500 cash as ive been reading up and alot of places charge to change them back so if i take only £500 worth of travellers cheques we%26#39;ll probably manage to get thru them so we wont be charged when we get back? does this sound a good idea you reckon?

Sounds very sensible to me. I can%26#39;t remember what my last bank used to charge, but I have a feeling it was a minimum of £2 however little I withdrew, and then a commission charge on top of that. It was pretty outrageous, so TCs are probably a better bet.

Hi trixxi - I got my travellers cheques on Saturday from Tesco. Cost me a tenner to change 800 quid to sterling TC, there%26#39;s nothing more to pay when they buy them back and you get clubcard points on them.

Trixxi, I%26#39;ve never been charged for changing sterling travellers cheques back - you can just pay them into your bank accout. You can get them from loads of places, the post office keep them in stock but I found the commission was slightly less from my own bank.

It was 1.25% from Tesco. I asked Thomas Cook where we booked how much it would cost to change £800 and it would have been £24 if we%26#39;d not booked with them and £12 cos we had. Still cheaper at Tesco. You probably can get cheaper, but I like the fact you get clubcard points too :)

If you think that you might need your atm card on holiday just let your bank know. When I was on holiday I couldn%26#39;t get any money out but someone told me that when you are in india it is to stop your cards being used over there and kloning. By letting them know they can unlock it and allow you access. This is for your own protection all you have to do is phone the number on the back of your card you can use this number if you are out there also.(Some cards work some don%26#39;t)

I did not realise you could get tesco points that is worth knowing. I never spend them in store they are worth 4 times value off hols and days out. Did you have to buy them over the phone. I didnt think our local store sells them so may need to do it on phone . Thanks

thankyou so much for all the replies! been doing a bit of searching and found Natwest sell TC%26#39;s and its 1% so as my other halfs with Natwest we may get them from there!

Can i ask did you buy the tescos TC%26#39;s in store?

Hi trixxi - yes I did buy them in store, very quick and easy.

    stirling travelers cheques

Please can i ask for some advice on where best to cash trvelers cheques?

Are there any play areas for children other than the beach?

Do you know if there are regular taxis?

    Any help is welcome!

    stirling travelers cheques

It might help if you said which resort your staying. Taxis are plentiful all over Goa. You want taxi ? ide like a £1 for everytime you was asked. Tee Hee Not really noticed any childrens play areas

    stirling travelers cheques

    How old are the Children?

Cash Cheques at Banks lots of the money exchanges don%26#39;t accept cheques.

    H

    Hi Bonnie,

It%26#39;s much easier to use atm cash machines than travellers cheques, if you are lucky enough to have a nationwide flex account, you don%26#39;t get charged for withdrawals.

You also get a better rate from them.

Goa is not the best place for the kids, they are not really well catered for but everyone will make a fuss of them, in a genuine friendly way, just keep an extra watch on their safety, exposed electrics etc are quite a hazzard, and watch the sea it can be dangerous at times.

    Hope this helps.

    ian.......

I%26#39;m sorry, forgot to say Calangute is where we are stayin.

    My daughter is 4yrs.

Thanks for the replies, i have travelers cheques and a nationwide flex account. with the sounds of things might hold onto the cheques and use my card.

    Cheers.

    Thunder storms

    Hi all,

Just checked extended weather forecast for next week and it says thunder storms, feel gutted as I go on Monday. However this was on weather.com and tried a few others that say it is mostly sunny next week.

Anyone got any info from a more local source?

    Thanks,

    Laura

    Thunder storms

    hi

Bruahy is the one to ask he gives a daily weather report see his post ';goa Tempeture'; and if you ask he%26#39;ll probably be able to tell you a local forcast we%26#39;re there in 2 weeks and 5 days hoping to see sun and alot of it ;o)

    hope this helps

    nickie

    Thunder storms

    Laura

Your post mirrors exactly what I did a couple of hours ago - I feel exactly the same as I get there on Monday too:-((

Let%26#39;s hope the weather forum%26#39;s wrong. I was in Egypt at Christmas and the weather forecast wasn%26#39;t accurate then so fingers crossed.

Cazzamoon, I have checked a few and they are all good, except that one. Still worried tho. I will keep my fingers crossed too. Gonna check again bit closer to the time as like you said, they are not always correct. I got my self worked up like this when I went to Bulgaria to find the sun cracking the flags (trying to convince my self now lol).

Where you flying from? I go from Manchester.

    Laura

Cracking the flags - LOL!! A good old Northern expression (I%26#39;m from Lancs).

I fly from Gatwick - land in Goa around 6am Monday. Staying at the southern end of Calangute.

    Hi, everyone,

I have been to Goa, for the last 3 years in March/April. Flying out 7th April this year and in all the times I have been I have not seen any thunderstorms or rain, it just gets hotter and hotter. Take no notice of weather, even the locals told me they never see rain etc until June. Plus when I have looked on these sites and it shows the weather for last year and some of them said clouds and rain on the dates we were there, obviously they must have got it wrong cause there was not a cloud in the sky !! Sometimes a little misty but that blew away with the nice cooling winds on the beach. Anyway hope I am not wrong X Happy hols everyone

These sites seem to change their forecasts daily - I checked them for Mexico last year and got myself worked up when one of them predicted rainstorms for a week and when we got there you could have fried an egg on those flagstones :-)

When I went in december the long term weather forecast said cloudy and rain. I was there 3 weeks and it was red hot every day and rained for one hour one night. When I went in feb it said hot and sunny and the first 4 days it was unnaturally cold and windy ! I wouldn%26#39;t take much notice. I get there next Tuesday morning and am not even looking at the weather forecast . It%26#39;ll be a great holiday no matter what and I%26#39;m pretty sure it%26#39;ll be hot.

Thanks for replies, feel much happier now.

don%26#39;t mean to be a killjoy but we were in goa 1st 2 weeks in feb and although weather was warm in the day it went chilly some nights which was nice cos it didn%26#39;t get humid. But 1st time been in feb and felt chilly my teenage daughter was wearing a wrap some nights where previously had A/C on alnight. Hoping weather has picked up as going again 1st week in april and even if it is forecast for thunder it may only be at night (hopefully)

Hi, me and family are of to Candolim on monday flying with thomas cook 3pm from manchester.

Sooo lokking forward to it but will be disappointed if thunder storms!!

    Bars in Candolim

Went to Candolim to eat at the Cactus Restaurant, we are hoping to go again on our next visit as the food was really nice and partner says it was the best fish he ate.

We didn%26#39;t really walk along the road or go to any other Restaurants or Bars so would anyone please be able to advise me where the bars are located from this Restaurant as we would like to explore Candolim abit more and maybe try another Restaurant on another evening?

Directions from cactus would be appreciated.

    Bars in Candolim

The Cactus is on the outskirts of Candolim and if this is as far as you went you didn%26#39;t really get to Candolim centre at all. If you were standing outside the restaurant facing the main road Candolim is towards your right and Calangute is on your left. You will find it a lot busier if you venture another 5 minutes down the road.

    Bars in Candolim

Thank you so much I thought as much. Is that 5minutes walking distance or by taxi? Any bars to drink that you can recommend?

5 mins by taxi. Walking is getting to be a real pain as they are widening the road so the dusty ditches we used to walk in are now filled with rocks.

Mango Grove or Bending Bamboos over the road are good.

    Hi

If you go to the opposite end of Candolim (get a taxi) there is a great restuarant called the Stone House, we go everytime in GOa and we cant complain, its lovely, there are a few bars up there, Cinnebar, Ruffles bar, and a couple of others I cant remember names of.

Also The Mango Grove is run by my friend Reggie and he has just opened a restuarnt/Bar just next to and slightly behind The Mango Grove it was really nice and lively in there.

Bending Bamboos is also really good as mentioned above.

I%26#39;ve heard a lot about bending bamboos. Quite fancy popping in this time. Is it suitable to take a 10 year old in ?

yes you should be fine in bbs

also for a really cheap drink go to the tiger bar, next door to bbs and upstairs, you can see the red light rope round it, we enjoyed sitting up here watching the people down below.

Bom sucesso is nice for a drink and a bit of karaoke, and upstairs they have pool tables, should you fancy a game.

    leela hotel! info re:rooms,lagoon suites??

    Hello!

My boyfriend and I are off to Goa in 2 weeks and wondered if anyone knew the Leela? We are in a lagoon suite..mixed reports.. so if anyone knows a room to avoid or a room to request , I would be hugely grateful!

Also - is Mobor beach nice?

We stayed at the Radisson white sands on Varca beach a few years ago and absolutely adored it- the space and the wild sea...is Mobor similar?

Also- we booked extra leg room on first choice but they have said we may not be sitting together- we may be across an aisle...is there any way to ensure sitting together- I really don%26#39;t fancy being leaned and drooled on by a stranger for ten hours...!

    Many many thanks..

    Sorcha.

    leela hotel! info re:rooms,lagoon suites??

Lagoon suites are brilliant, if a bit OTT ( do we REALLY need a bathroom and a TV each? ). We were in room 263 in 2006 but I suspect all are great. The cleaning staff sometimes need a reminder to do the job properly but mostly things are fine. If you thought the Rad was good, boy are you in for a treat. Enjoy!

Thanks Gibson- great to hear from someone who%26#39;s been there..yes in the Radisson- we noticed that the second week , our rooms were not cleaned to the same standard at all, but I think it was our fault as we didn%26#39;t realise we should tip them during the holiday and not leave it til the end like we did!

But nothing as petty as that could spoil my holiday- everyone we met who worked in the hotel was just so friendly and polite.

    Thanks for the sdvice!

    Sorcha

We returned a week ago (our 11th stay) and posted a report on Trip Advisor. We aways have a lagoon suite on the upper floor and have never had a complaint about cleanliness. The maids and room service boys who come in at night for turndown are brilliant and it does not go amiss to tip them during your stay rather than leave it to the end. Premier rooms are new this year but have no balconies as these have been converted into small lounge areas. Lagoon suites were last refurbished by Four Seasons about 10 years ago when they converted single pavillion rooms into suites which is why they have 2 bathrooms and 2 TV%26#39;s - so spacious and compared to what you would pay for this type of accommodation elsewhere are a ';bargain'; - some of them however are in need of updating now.

Just to be more specific regarding the cleaning issue; one of the bathrooms became heavily infested with small black flies ( fleas? ). We reported this to housekeeping early one morning and lo and behold....they were still there later that afternoon!

Several hundred of the blighters! Anyway, a more assertive conversation with the manager produced the required result by early evening and that was the last we saw of the things. Sometimes you have to cast off the ';British reserve';. Otherwise, a fabulous place to be.

    Thanks very much kay!

much appreciated,,only ten more days to go!!

    can%26#39;t wait!

U are in for a treat....lagoon suites are briliant...Do tip in the beginning of your holiday and the see the difference in service...a few rupees can do wonders in the level of service ....

Tip at start of holiday? I think not. Tipping is a recognition of good service, so when we get it then we`ll do it.A 5 star deluxe hotel shouldn`t need basic services to be pre-paid anyway. Even in the USA tips are given AFTER service is received.

Gibson and niceandnotty- thanks so much for the info-

My instinct would be to tip having already received the good service and not before but as I said- perhaps we should have realised not to wait until our last day- to tip..(at the Radisson)!

Just a thought- Do you tip at the beach shacks, taxis etc and is it 10% approx?

I%26#39;m always highly aware that a paltry tip from me -the tourist can make a huge difference in the Goan%26#39;s income that day- but wondered what sort of tips we%26#39;re talking about- I wouldn%26#39;t want to insult anyone by being stingy through ignorance..

    many thanks..Sorcha

Put it this way. We get a much lower fare quote if we walk down from Leela to Holiday inn first. I.E. the drivers add on a premium if they know you are staying at the Leela. Ask around, and particularly your tour rep, if you are on a package, what the rates SHOULD be. We always give godd tips in shacks if the food is good and 10% is fine. However, particularly good service ( one guy even loaned me a pair of sandals when mine disintegrated ) will get a bonus, as will good sunbed service. You`ll work it out.

Thanks Gibson for the advice..as you say we%26#39;ll work it out!

    massage,pedicures etc etc

    hi ya,

going to the highland beach resort in 11 days!!!

was just wondering if you can get pampered here at the hotel or else where!

If so what prices would i expect to pay!

    thanks to all who reply!

    massage,pedicures etc etc

The Phoenix Park hotel has a beauty parlour. I never used it but heard good things and not far from the highland beach.

    massage,pedicures etc etc

Yes you can but the beauty salon is much dearer at the hotel than outside

i had a massage at taras just over the road from the supermarket, and it was excellent for 450r

i also had my nails done, but i woulnd%26#39;t bother again, because it was so hot, the nails stayed sticky.

But then the day before we came home a young girl did them on the beach, with diamonds on, hands and feet cost 300r

    hope that helps

  • oily skin
  • DEET spray

I contacted the london hospital for tropical diseases online and they have a shop where you can buy travel products. There is a 50% deet spray and a 100% deet spray as well as products for children. Your order is sent the nextt day. I have used the 100% before and although it won%26#39;t make it to the top perfume charts, it works. A word of advice, it%26#39;s very oily so spray it on your hands and smother yourself in it instead os spraying it straight on as it makes the floor very very slippy. Hope this helps. The web address is www.thehtd.org

    DEET spray

thanks, i used 100% deet in south america. going to goa on sat and dont know if 100% is necessary.also dont know if there is dengue fever there?

??was goiong to go with 50% deet.

    DEET spray

    Hi,

I do get bitten really badly and go for the 100% DEET.

Have you tried using Avon skin so soft woodland with it? I have a liberal spray all over after putting it on, it does make it a little more pleasant to the nose!!!!

Have a great trip and hope the pesky mozzies keep away!!

You can buy EXPEDITION 100% deet spray in Millets, they also sell a 50% deet with a natural product that put them off biting also, not sure how good it is but i believe its good.

    Not so package holiday

Please can anyone tell me where in or around the Goa area is a good place to go, my girlfriend and i are in calangute at the momment but it%26#39;s a bit to package tour. Guesthouse would be nice but no essential. Thanks

    Not so package holiday

Since you are already there why not hire a taxi for the day? The driver will show you to lots of places. The south is pretty unspoilt and there are many quieter beaches further north than Calangute.

    Not so package holiday

Agree. head towards Mandrem. Beautiful beaches and very unspoilt. Loads of guesthouses and beachhuts up there.

Ask the driver to take you to the dunes village at Mandrem they are little huts made up into a little village you can walk through and go onto the beach. Excellant loos and very good food. Beautiful beach. You can have a look round first and then decide if you want to go back and stay a couple of days.

    visa panic

may be panicking prematurely here but due to fly next saturday 15th and not got visas (or passports) back yet. I know we left it a bit late but they should have received them last thursday. Do they take notice of when you are going to get them back to you in time? Whats the longest its taking at the minute? Just got an awful feeling about it and i can%26#39;t get to london as i%26#39;m a teacher and can%26#39;t take day off before holidays. Could my partner pick both up if needed?

    visa panic

From previous postings postal applications look like they take anything upto 10 days. I always go inperson to HCI london, as its not to far for me to travel. I have also picked up other peoples, and friends have taken mine on my behalf. Good luck hope you get them soon.

    visa panic

Right so just need to get through to IHC now and speak to a person to see where they are. If they have been posted there is no point going down. Usually get them about 6 weeks in advance, can%26#39;t cope with this level of stress - the thought of not getting there this holiday is gonna tip me over the edge.

anwad we are in barnsley and sent ours to birmingham and they only took 6 days and that included the weekend so i would just wait a few days

Hi if you go on to royal mail website you will be able to track your special delivery, good luck

no we can track the going out - they received it on the 28th, but the muppet at the post office didnt give us the tracking number for the return envelope. Been trying all day today for help, finally been told that they cant find any trace but their systems are playing up so to ring back tomorrow. Can%26#39;t even get replacement passports in time if they dont come. Thats £1400 down the drain. Gutted. will keep you posted.

For what it%26#39;s worth Anwad, I did get the number for the return package and tracked it daily - but it always stated that it had not yet been recorded on the system, even when I had it in my hand. I%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s on the way back as we speak :-)

what a complete pain, we go on the same day as yourself and also sent ours off very late too, got them back in 8days though. have you had them back since?

they have just found the passports today, don%26#39;t know where they where! However now they are saying that there is only 1 postal order (i know there were two). Asked if they could hang on and would send another recorded - they would get it tomorrow. No chance, they are sending everything back to us, recorded delivery so should get them tomorrow (wednesday). OH is then going to Birmingham on Thursday, if we have got them by then, and trying that way. Not even bothered packing yet because we don%26#39;t know if we are going! Keep you posted.

If you go to Birmingham make sure you are there very early, i mean 7am. If not you may find you dont get a queue ticket and then its a totally wasted journey. Good luck.

aiming for 6 and camping on pavement! Thanks for tip.

    16th march and anti malarials

    hi! thanks for reading.

i have just booked a very maybe rash, trip to goa arriving 16th march. haopyn with the silly last minute decision, visa arriving day before etc, just concerned with vaccination.. i wil make enquiries asap on monday, but just incase anyione had any insight before then? i have dfone mammouth web searches and seems to be the malorone etc type route..again, will ask medical type people on monday, but roim previous experience, inknow one is a week before and one i had a suspician worked a day before. have i got this wrong? i took larium in south america and never again!!!!!also i am going solo for 2 weeks and want to get the most out of it, obviously, buty conhfess to not knowing anything of significance, but really want to get out to some non resort stuff. any experience is warmlyu welcombed. i have replied to candys post of 16th and it would be great to catch up with any other explorers.

    16th march and anti malarials

Due to the posts on this site, I had the information needed to ask the pharmacist and doctor about what to do. The official stance on malaria tablets is that they ARE necessary for travel to Goa. Chloroquin is under revision but it is still a reccomended tablet. I have opted for malarone which is available with a private prescription but my pharmacist says that tablets nowadays shouldn%26#39;t have the sane side effects are larium did. Try chloroquine and proguanil which is available from any pharmacy. I%26#39;m not sure for your time restrictions. Malarone only needs to be started 2 days before you go but it%26#39;s pricey. My advice - get to doctor asap on monday or nhs direct tomorrow

    16th march and anti malarials

Proguanil/chloroquine in combination come in seven week packs - you need to take them a week before you go and four weeks afterwards. They%26#39;re much cheaper than Malarone, and still the recommended drugs of first resort, but do check with your health centre. I generally take them and have never had any problems with them (other than remembering to take them for the four weeks post-holiday!).

There are many forums on anti malaria I have responded to. We have been to Goa 11 times in the last six years. The first time was going to be British bought Anti malaria tablets, they made me feel constantly sick and really upset my stomach. then we got chatting to a nurse on the beach who advised who advised me to stop taking them and go to the local chemist and buy the ';Goan'; tablets. (They are readily available at any chemist as are most of the medication you would normally pay a fortune for here. anti histimine paracetmol imodium etc). These you take once per week as opposed to once per day (much better)and only cost a few rupees. We now bring enough back for the next trip. My advise is if you are traveling with a companion just buy enough here to get you over the first 2 weeks prior to travel and then switch to the local ones same effect less cost and only once per week.

    p.s.

if you love Goa as much as we do dont forget to bring some back for the next trip.

The one a week tablets are NOT effective against the strain of malaria present in Goa. Please take medical advice before you decide to do this. Many people unintentionally mis-lead fellow travellers with this type of information so be careful. As far as I am aware the only one a week tablet you can take is Larium which is extremely dodgy. The Goan chemists reccommend all sorts of things that will not work. Be careful ! Speak to your doctor and take his advice, you will have to see him for your jabs anyway. if all else fails I have some lucky charms that are very effective that I can let you have at a reasonable price.

This subject comes up all the time on this forum and we%26#39;ve heard of everything from gin and tonic to marmite sandwiches as anti malarial treatment.

I would like to think that if there was an effective treatment that could be taken once a week then the medical profession would know about it.

    BC

I am travelling myself on 29th Mar so have just looked into this. Both my doctor and chemist advised to ring the school of tropical medicine approx 10 days before travelling and they will give you the most up to date advice on what to take. You will need a prescription for Malarone but most other anti-malarials can be bought over the counter.

    Have a good trip.

just wanted to say thank you so much for the detailed and considerd advice. thanks you.

For what it is worth, I do not take any medication when I go to India. I did on my first trip and now, just une sprays on my clothes and caution. My shots are up to date. The most important is rabies IMO as they are way too many stray dogs in India. One for tetanos is prudent too.

Dont take any anti malarials. It is quite unnecessary. Use topical cream Odomos cheaply and easily available in Goa and all over India. It does not aggravate the skin, and is very effective.

  • GOA for Xmas & New Year - Where's best to stay

Hi looking at going to Goa for Xmas and the New Year (usually do Thailand), Please can anyone tell me the best place to stay (resort and hotel) Looking at all options - any advise would be greatfully appreciated, as I really don%26#39;t know where to start.

GOA for Xmas %26amp; New Year - Where's best to stay

There are lots of places but it depends what you want from a resort. Do you like it busy or a bit more laid back? What sort of hotel are you looking for? On the whole the hotels in Goa do not come close the standard that you get in Thailand though there are some that do.

GOA for Xmas %26amp; New Year - Where's best to stay

    Hi Minnie9

Thanks for reply. We like to be on the beach, but have things to do close at hand. Enjoy day trips, and different places to eat of a evening, within safe walking distance. Also a good 3* or 4* hotel. Like you say we have been spoilt with Thailand.

    HLC,

I have sent you a PM.

Flights from Cyprus, Paphos or larnaca

My friends are moving to Cyprus this summer and would like to join us on our holiday to Goa in the winter. Can anyone advise on the best way to travel. Are there any direct charter or scheduled flights? Or will they have to endure all the changes i.e Dubai and Mumbai?

Flights from Cyprus, Paphos or larnaca

    Hi

I believe that there are schedule flights from Paphos to Bahrain and Dubai by Cyprus Airways and there are schedule flights into Goa from both of those places.

Flights from Cyprus, Paphos or larnaca

    Thats what i thought, thanks

Palace of the wings from Candalim

    Hi everone!

Im goin to the Colonia Santa Maria (Baga)in April, just 4 weeks to go (yip eee!!) and wanted to know if I can travel to the Palace of the Winds from here. Does anyone know where it is I think there are a few????!!!?

    Thanks in advance.

    Lianne

Palace of the wings from Candalim

Do you mean the red/pink Palace of the Winds in Jaipur?

If so, I%26#39;m not sure how you%26#39;d get there. There may be direct flights from Goa to Jaipur, or you may have to change in Mumbai. It would be quite a trek though and I would have said not worth going unless you were going to do a bit more than just the palace - although it%26#39;s stunning, it won%26#39;t keep you occupied for very long. Jaipur itself is a fabulous city though.

Palace of the wings from Candalim

Thanks for the advice. Do you know if the waterfalls are near? Can you give any other nice places to go near Baga? I am going to try and see Cola beach, go to the elephant sanctuary and try to go on a safari but really dont know until I get there whats on offer. Also Ive heard theres a tiger sanctuary! cant wait!

Hopefully it wont rain, I saw on BBC wather a few days ago it raine dinm Goa but it was just the 1 off so hopefuly wil b ok! When does the actual rain season start do you know?

I have learnt a lot from trip adviser and I notice your name a lot, youa re very helpful!

    Hi Lianne

I don%26#39;t know the north of Goa very well, but if you do a search for %26#39;trips from the north%26#39; in the search box, you%26#39;ll find a list that Perrystanks put together a while back of loads of trips from that area that you can do. That should give you a pretty good idea of what%26#39;s available and what you%26#39;d like to do.

    Hi

You can get a direct flight to Jaipur with Kingfisher about 13000 rs return see www.makemytrip.com

  • safety in goa

    hi everyone!

Me and my boyfriend are due to go to goa (staying at the sunvillage in arpora) on the 22 dec, it is a while away yet but really looking forward to it....only thing im worried about is the recent media coverage, most of you will know what im talking about. Some of the news reports are saying it is wise to only stick to excursions and not venture too far out the hotel!! i hope thats not the case as our sole purpose for going to goa is to explore!..

i suppose by writing this post im just looking for some reassurance on how fabulous goa is and how safe it is?

    thanks guys,

    nat xx

    safety in goa

    Nat

Take no notice. I%26#39;m leaving for Goa in a few days, on my own, and feel totally comfortable. It%26#39;s my first time and I will probably be safer there than I do travelling home from work at night here! All one needs to do is to adopt the same caution that one would here in the UK, don%26#39;t do anything silly and keep your wits about you.

    safety in goa

Hi Nat - I see you come from Liverpool. I%26#39;d have said that Goa was a much safer place than Liverpool (or London come to that), and that you just need to take the usual precautions that you would take anywhere. Don%26#39;t take drugs, don%26#39;t get drunk alone or with strange men, don%26#39;t wear ostentatious jewellery - all the usual stuff. I%26#39;ve been to Goa many times, on my own and with the other half, and I can honestly say I%26#39;ve never felt even uncomfortable, never mind threatened. Travelling around was never a problem. It%26#39;s the same anywhere. Most people are absolutely fine, but there%26#39;s always the tiny minority that make it difficult for others.

Couldn%26#39;t agree more. Been many times both as a couple and on my own (I%26#39;m female). Do not stay in your hotel. There%26#39;s no need and you%26#39;ll miss everything about the place that makes it so wonderful. I personally feel safer there than here but of course use your common sense - there are bad eggs anywhere. The majority of people in Goa are wonderful. There are some areas that have a reputation for late parties and the drug culture but that doesn%26#39;t apply everywhere and can be avoided quite easily. Go out and enjoy !

Nat, as others have said nowhere is totally safe but by not venturing far out of your hotel and only sticking to excursions you will miss out on so much in Goa. On my first trip to Goa I had my handbag snatched off my shoulder on the 2nd night by two men on a motorbike but it was partly my own fault for walking along with it dangling from my shoulder late at night. It didn%26#39;t put me off returning the following year and now I either wear a bum bag or give my money to my partner. Taxis are cheap and plentiful so you can easily get out and about on a night without walking far anyway. During the day i%26#39;ve walked for miles along the beach in south Goa on my own and felt totally safe. Just take sensible precautions and I%26#39;m sure you will have a fantastic holiday.

Thanks guys, im sure i will be fine im sensible enough and me and my boyfriend never leave eachothers side anyway lol,

    Hi

Bag snatching has been back again this season. Its getting regular each year now.Never used to be. Sorry but Goa is not now the former idyllic paradise of its reputation and post card pictures. Now you have to be sensible,or be cautious.Unfortunately these sort of things always get worse never better.

As most posters say, common sense and normal precautions should suffice, but to ';take no notice'; as Cazzamoon suggests is just irresponible.

Some people would argue that the mother of Scarlett Keeling ';took no notice'; regarding her daughter%26#39;s safety.

We%26#39;re also on our first visit to Goa this April - some very wise advice already mentioned!

There is/can be trouble ANYWHERE! I spent a week in Nice with a couple of girlfriends back in 2003. I was in the room reading but my two girlfriends were sunbathing across the road on the beach.

As they crossed back to our hotel they pressed the pedestrian crossing button (much like the green man in the UK!). Traffic lights turned red - a family car stopped and a motorbike pulled alongside - bike opened the family car door and grabbed the Mums handbag and drove off at speed!

Just be vigilant - don%26#39;t flash the cash or jewellery. Crime can happen anywhere but you are much less prone to it if you keep your whits about you.

We are really looking forward to our first visit to Goa.

    Have fun!

    GT

thanks guys, i think we will stick with goa then. as mentioned we have already booked the north, would you say south was better? also im wondering about what clothes/attire to wear when out and about? obviously i dont want to attract the wrong kind of attention lol, but i dont want to be covered from head to toe either!!! what do you suggest??

    Hi Natalie

Personally I prefer the south as it%26#39;s quieter than the north but if you want more nightlife you%26#39;re better in the north. I believe Arpora is fairly quiet anyway though it%26#39;s within easy reach of the nightlife of Baga and Calangute. Regarding what to wear I just wear the same sort of clothes as I would on any beach holiday whilst I%26#39;m in the resort but you%26#39;ll need to cover up a bit more if you%26#39;re visiting temples etc. Also please don%26#39;t go topless whilst you%26#39;re in Goa.

    is shillong safe?

can u suggest me,Shillong is safe or not regarding all these terrorist activites.

Is it nice place to visit for 4-5 days bcoz i will travel from allahabad to shillong alongwith my family

    is shillong safe?

Shillong is one of the safest places in the north-east.At present the weather is good and you can try Orchid Hotel of Meghalaya tourism. It is a budget hotel, clean and safe.Ph no:0364-2222664/2224933 0r

    is shillong safe?

thank u dear for gving me reply.

plz tell me how will be the weather n end of may or starting june?

and what is the nearest tourist attraction cities or places around shillong?

The weather during the end of may-june is the start of the rainy season. This is to see all the waterfalls in their full majesty and the countryside is green.

The places you can see in and around are elephant falls, shillong peak, wards lake ,umium lake,don-bosco museum, thankarang park in cherrapunjee, mawsamai caves, nohkalikai falls and many more interesting sites.

The city close to shillong is Guwahati. There you can see the famous Kamakhaya Temple, have a boat ride on the Brahmaputra river, etc.Kahziranga nationbal park is also not far from Guwahati.

This experiance of the north-east is one of its kind.

You can ring the manager of Orchid Hotel for any help or assistance, concerning the trip on his mobile.

Meghalaya(a place to visit, to see nature in all its glory)

Thanks for the info. I knew a lot of lovely Khasi people at my previous work place and I do want to go there some day especially to see the orchids and waterfalls but it is so very far away from Mumbai !!!

Meghalaya(a place to visit, to see nature in all its glory)

Hey! nothing is far. If you so wish to come to shillong it can be arranged and with all the low fares offered by so many airlines now it has become quite convenient. Its a place to come to and not forget ever for its natural beauty and the hospitable people.

I will get in touch with you Viky8 for more tips, whenever we plan a trip to Meghalaya, sooner rather than later, I pray. The biggest problem is wasting almost 3 days total for going and coming from Mumbai because the flight timings to Calcutta are not at all convenient from Mumbai. This has not changes as I remember my Khasi colleagues also used to face this problem every time they wanted to go home, they had to waste precious days of hard to get leave, on travel time.

    candolim 17/3

Hi, me and famiy arriving 17th match - staying at highland beach for 2 weeks cant wait!

    candolim 17/3

Good choice we stayed there 2 years ago lovely hotel.

    candolim 17/3

hope you have a great time we%26#39;ve got 2 weeks and 3 days bring it on whey heyyyy!! ;o)

    nickie

Our first time to Goa - looking firward to it!

My son wants to the elephant trip, has anyone else been there?

    Many thanks

hi alimalone you%26#39;ll have a fantastic time.we stayed at the highland in2005 loved it.barbara

Dinner at Lake palace now only for residents of the hotel :(

I enquired about having dinner at lake palace and was told that the restaurants are only open to residents of the hotel. sad :(

Dinner at Lake palace now only for residents of the hotel :(

Not really. For one the main restaurant in the hotel has no view of the City Palace. The coffee shop has an oblique view. The rooftop restaurant will be too cold in the winter tourist season anyway. The Sunset Terrace at Fatehprakash compensates nicely any day and there are no strings attached!! Next time youre in Udaipur, Glukos, the treat is on me at the Sunset Terrace!!

Anything to do for kids in Candolim!!

    Can anyone advise me

i am off to highland beacj on the 24th March- its all very scary when you havent been there before???

can anyone advise me what there is for kids my son is 11 and worry about the safeness out there etc..

    can anyone help me out!!

also reviews say travel light-- is it worth taking hardly anything and buying clothes out there?

Anything to do for kids in Candolim!!

Stop worrying. I have been to Candolim a few times with my children who are now 9 and 10. The main things to bear in mind safety wise are the roads (keep them on the inside) and the sea (strong undercurrent in places).

We found lots to do and they were never bored and perfectly safe. The Goans adore children and they really go out of their way to keep them entertained. Most bars/restaurants are child friendly and we never had any problems with the food. There are lots of places I could recommend. PM me if you%26#39;d like more info.

Anything to do for kids in Candolim!!

Just to echo Simmy%26#39;s comments, be careful by the roads and on no account let him go swimming in the sea.

The shore dips very steeply all along the beach at Candolim/Calangute, but especially at Candolim, there is a huge shipwreck, River Princess, just off shore which has affected the currents. I%26#39;ve heard that some people have drowned there.

Maybe its a bit late now, but hepatitus A + B jabs should be recommended.

Avoid the local dogs as there is a risk of rabies.

As for clothes, there are loads of stalls but I did find that there was not much for kids, apart from the odd T-shirt. I made sure I took enough for mine and that includes some long trousers and socks for the evenings, when the mossies are out.

    Don%26#39;t worry though!

I%26#39;m sure you son will love it, there%26#39;s not much %26#39;entertainment%26#39; for kids but mine did not get bored once.

Goans are very friendly and family orientated, and if you have kids with you, it%26#39;s a real icebreaker.

    rain and thunder

Have seen a lot of rain and thunder forecast next week starting tuesday and overcast is this like the caribbean short bursts or prolonged tiresome rain.

    rain and thunder

    It rained last night, I didn%26#39;t hear it and I don%26#39;t think there was much but there was a good gruond covering around ';The Mango House';

    Rob

    rain and thunder

Rob do the locals look forward to the rain when it comes as they do in other hot countries.

We were very pleased that we came to see you and we will definitly bring you more things when we come again.

The children were lovely and you could really tell that they enjoyed themselves.

    dona sylvia hotel

Hi we went to this hotel in 2002 and enjoyed it, has anyone been recently, and if so has it been refurbished or anything because the price seems to have shot up.

    dona sylvia hotel

It could be that the price is just gone up over the five years since your last visit.

Thay are in the process of building new blocks and have more facilities now.

    dona sylvia hotel

Some refurbishment has been carried out. The new building are not due to open until 2011 at the earliest and will be separated form the existing buildings. They intend to make the new ones 5*. Although the hotel thinks it is now 4* in MHO it only rates a 3*. If you go, be prepared to play the towel on sunbed game around the pool or do what did and use the beach.

    Bogmallo beach

Traveling to goa first time and am a bit worried about the currency...can anyone tell me if theres an currency exchange in bogmallo? and what the exchange rate is? Is it better to take sterling or travelers cheques?

Any info would be appreciated as im going in 3 weeks

    Thanks

    Bogmallo beach

If you%26#39;re staying at the Bogmallo Beach Hotel they will change your money in reception. If you want an ATM the nearest one is in Vasco, which is a cab ride away. They have safes in the rooms to keep your valuables so it%26#39;s up to you if you want to take travs. If you do, take sterling. The exchange rate should be around 75 to 80 to the £

    BC

    Bogmallo beach

Its better to chnage your money outside than at reception as you will get a better rate outside.

The exchange rate seems to have gone up to 80 now.

You will definetely find a money excahnge place outside the hotel.Just inquire from your rep.

Thanks very much for ur replys xxx

Sorry !they don%26#39;t have safes in your rooms here, you can get safety deposit boxes behind reception. (got it mixed up with Holiday Inn) I don%26#39;t think there%26#39;s many places outside to change money you might be lucky in one of the shops or the jewellers.

    BC

I%26#39;ve booked a deluxe room and it mentioned safe%26#39;s so hopefully i%26#39;ll be ok. Another thing is it better to go on trips with the reps of would i be ok going with the taxi firm who%26#39;s based outside? Heard a few people mention that its alot cheaper to go with the taxi firm

    Jess

There are loads of taxis in the village square just outside the hotel main gates and they will definately be a lot cheaper than an organised tour - the driver will stay with you all day and bring you back - suggestions would be Spice Plantation, Old Goa and Hindhu temples, Panjim for shopping (Bombay Bazaar a must)and Bettys Boat - although this is nearly an hours drive for an early start (9ish).

With regard to sterling or t/cqs take whatever you are comfortable with - I prefer sterling t/cqs as they are insured and no problem exchanging them.

    Thanks for all your replys

Can recommend a driver called Gangaram whose just outside the Bogmallo Beach Hotel.Nagraj Naik too another excellent driver. We fondly call him Nike....tell him Christine and John from Yorkshire recommended him.....

    chandras jewellers

Just like to warn people about this shop. My husband and i bought some rings from chandra in December,we took them too a jewller back home, only to be told they are complete rubbish. Already new that as mine made my finger go black. Just been back to Goa and took the rings back, he made us new ones with better diamonds and gold, but beware the old ones are for sale in his shop.Would never ever use this robber again.

    chandras jewellers

Thanks for that. Lucky you got them replaced

    chandras jewellers

My wife got a ring from Chandras two years ago. She stated the colour and quality of the diamonds she wanted, there were three larger diamonds and numerous smaller diamonds. They took three attempts to get the ring made correctly.

She had the ring valued in the UK and it was totally slated, the valuer called it amateurish. When we returned to Goa she took the ring back and they agreed to change the diamonds so that they were all the same quality. They did this by substituting poorer diamonds for the three larger stones, instead of putting in better quality small diamonds, as they had promised to do. Next time in Goa Chandra%26#39;s did not want to know. My wife had the ring made in to a necklace at New Era in Candolim, who as always did lovely work.

If you want to be ripped off then Chandras is the place to go.

I agree about Chandra. I had a ring I got from my mum, it had a nice emerald, but I did not like the style. Chandra agreed to make a new ring using my emerald. I was very unhappy with the workmanship, but eventually reluctantly accepted the ring after they reduced the price. When I got home I had the ring checked locally. The jeweller was the same one who had valued the original ring a year earlier. He told me that the emerald in the new ring was not the one that had been in the original ring, and was a very poor example. In addition the ring was so poorly made that the stone was on the verge of dropping out. My husband thinks that that was probably deliberate as then they would not have been found out.

The next time in Goa I went back to Chandra, who denied everything, even though I had the photgraphs and jewellers reports showing that the emeralds were different. I feel so angry as this was the only piece of jewellery I got from my mum when she died, and she loved her emerald. I agree with Goansoon, if you want to be cheated Chandra is the best place to go.

    Hi

I had a bad experience last year with a certain jewellers not the one mentioned i did post quite a lengthy topic on them at the time, i went back this year ready to KILL as i was really upset and had corresponded with them on my return last year..

anyway to cut a long story short i had three options to have a full refund but via my visa card!!!

have the ring made differently to my choice!!! or have the difference that it had been valued at back home but again only via my visa card!!

i decided to opt for the 2nd choice to have it re-made but this time a solid band and at there suggestion two extra diamonds and made in white gold there was no extra charge and i must say i am very happy with the ring now i havent had it valued but probebly will, but the feeling that i had been ripped of has gone and to be honest i doubt that they would dare pull at stunt again as they were not expecting two women to actually stand up to them and whilst we were there they lost at least 4 potential customers not by us shouting but by the fact that they knew things were not right so the answer is stand your ground chandras is obviously a very unscrupulous person/s and on this website if they get bad reviews then they hopefully wont be in business long

what%26#39;s the best honest shop to go to buy your gold in candolim??

    Coburg

To be honest i wouldnt have a clue!! so many people give out there experiences about good jewellers on this site that i would read back and have a look you will see that mostly the same ones come back time and again but i wouldnt like to recommend one as each person has a different experience i went to ashok jewellers this time just to check out prices as i would have liked a diamond pendant necklace i found whoever served me not interested and unhelpful so needless to say i left without buying that was my experience but others have found them very good i would suggest you take a note of the ones that keep getting recommended and check them all out.

    Good Luck

my friend had a beaufiful ring made can%26#39;t remember how diamonds(baquettes) he underestimated how many diamonds she would need and didnt charge her for the difference and i have to say it was lovely can%26#39;t remember his name but he is at the bottom of beach road on the right going down next to a tailors which is his also he has excellent testimonies which i have seen and just so happens know of the people

I use living jewels i%26#39;ve never had a problem with them.

I haven%26#39;t personally had anything made but my aunt goes 2-3 times a year stays in calangute but travels to candolim to buy her jewellry. She uses Ashoka which is in the Magnum resorts shops on the front. If husband gets board theres a bar outside called the Haveli.

Maybe all us travelling to Candolim in the coming weeks should make a point to window shop at Chandras, and mention the several bad reviews on this forum. If he realises there is this network, maybe he will be a little less unscrupulous. Have been using a jeweller in Calangute for the past 6 or 7 years never had a problem. Rings are always at least worth double or 3 or 4 times what i paid

My suggestion would be, is if you have made good friends with local Goan people ask them to go with you to a jewellers shop they would either use or recommend. Although not having bought any jewellery we did have some that needed repairing, a gold ring that had been squashed totally and the stone had fallen out, a gold chain where the clasp had broken and a bracelet where the clasp was loose, which the jewellers repaired and also attached a safety chain to it. Our friends advised us who to go to and the total cost for repairs and cleaning the jewellery,600rupees.

    Accomodation - Margao

    Hi All

I am moving to Margao for two months in April and May to intern and have a couple of questions (background, I am female, UK/US, late twenties, lived in Moscow/Karachi/Western Europe and but only been to India for maybe a month in total before, on holiday mostly in Kerala).

Accomodation - since its only two months I am reluctant to go to all the hassle of renting an apartment, but the drawback to interning is that you don%26#39;t really get paid. Can anyone suggest a niceish guesthouse, or somewhere with some charm. in Margao where I could be a semi-permanent resident for GBP 20ish/night?

I know that there are nicer places at Colva/Benaulim but am not really confident on a scooter and given that I have to get to work every day, its probably not practical to have a cab every day...

    Any recommendations v. welcome.

    thanks

    Accomodation - Margao

I am fairly sure Margao has mainly domestic business type accomodation, Benaulim /Colva would certainly be nicer, what about catching the bus to Margao it%26#39;s straightforward and costs 7 rps

    Accomodation - Margao

There%26#39;s a review here of the Youth Hostel in Margao which might be a short-term solution

    thebackpacker.net/travelhostels/3056_margao_…

Thanks both of you - that is really helpful.

There%26#39;s also a large purpose built hotel similar to an Ibis hotel etc. I%26#39;ll try and remember the name of it....it might also be okay for the first couple of nights.

There%26#39;s the Nanutel - don%26#39;t know if that%26#39;s the one you%26#39;re thinking of. It%26#39;s fine, but it may be a bit expensive. Rack rate for that time of year is Rs1300 a night. As far as I know it does have a/c - I%26#39;ve only ever been in there to use the loo!!

    Hi

I agree with Goanjock. If I were alone I would feel much happier in Benaulim than Margao especially at night. You can rent an apartment short term for about 10,000 rupees a month at Maria Hall which is near the bus stop and the rickshaw stand. If you let me know the name of the place you are working I will ask friends in Margao for advice if you want somewhere close by.

That%26#39;s the one LG and although it comes within Puffin%26#39;s budget I agree it is quite expensive and I sure Puffin will find far cheaper accomadation than the £20 they have budgeted.

p.s. and if you went for Benaulim as I said you could catch the bus and if you wanted back quicker then a Tuk tuk from Margao would cost 50/100 rupees depending on haggling ;-)

Goa Woodlands Hotel right in the heart of margao City, near the bus station, would be ideal and would be well under your budget.

Also you can rent an apartment in Colva for Rs.10000/- a month and a share a cab to Margao would cost you 8 rupees and only 10 mins.

    Sewage in the sea

Read some worrying reviews where in has mentioned raw sewage being pumped into the sea near lighthouse beach, does anyone know if this is tru or just rumour. If it is true where would you suggest we could go for some safe (and Pleasant) swimming. We are staying at the Leela at the beginning of April and my wife has already sworn she will not get in the sea! Many Thanks

    Sewage in the sea

The Leela has its own section of beach , well away from Lighthouse beach. We swam most days and it seemed clean enough, didn%26#39;t go down with any stomach bug or anything. They also patrol this bit of beach so you don%26#39;t get any hastle apart from one guy and his boat offering snorkelling trips. Also, there is quite a strong current flowing along the beach so any outflow is going to be swept away. Would guess it is as clean as any Med beach.

Leela is a great hotel, have a great time

    Sewage in the sea

I stayed at the Leela in Jan/Feb this year and the private beech was closed for one day due to sewage leaking into the sea. This only happened one day and the rest of the time was fine. There is a strong undercurrent to look out for.Hope i am not sounding to negative as i thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Leela. The staff were friendly and i had a great holiday in Kerala.

    ps

My 3 year old had a great time at the Leela private beach although i had to hold onto him at the waters edge. Also the guy that patrols the beach is called Ali, just be firm if you do not want to book any trips with him because he will pester you everyday.

Have a nice holiday. If you need any more info leave a message through the forum.

    Ted

    Hi

There is no sewage system here as such that can pump sewage anywhere, all buildings have a soak away or septic tank.

There is a rain water drainage system that discharges onto the beach and the water does pool near the rock on lighthouse/Hawah beach.

My wife and I swim in the sea most days and have not had any problems as with the many visitors here, the waters are safe for swimming with lifeguards posted along the beach should you have a problem.

The seas may be rough in April as the monsoon season is getting underway so swimming in the sea may not be an option.

    Enjoy your stay

    a few questions

    Hi all,

I am just starting to do a little research on india for a trip that we, 2 couples, are planning next year, this will be our first time.

we have about 3 weeks that we can play with and have been looking at the following destinations, which can be reversed if need be .

flying from either sydney or brisbane ,

    Delhi 2nts

    Varanasi 2nts

    Khajuraho 2nts

    Agra 2nts

    Jaipur 2nts

    Udaipur 2nts

    Bombay 2nts

    Goa 2nts

    Bangalore 2nts

then onto bali for a weeks R%26amp;R

    1. Can anyone tell me if we should be spending more or less time at any place or something we should not bother with or include .

    2. Are we trying to fit in too much ?

    3. Does anyone know what airlines fly to bali and where from ?

    4. Can you recomend where to stay in each place ...i didnt realise there were so many suburbs in each place.

Not overly into huge crowds , not 100% of the time anyway , but i would still love to see how hectic delhi and mumbai are .we like to walk , restaurants and somewhere to sit and have a nice drink at the end of the day is in our sights.

    5. I have a few ideas of what to see and do from an advertised online tour...but does anyone know of better things to see and do away from the usual and if it is easy for us to arrange a tour like this ourselves , as the tour prices seem extremely high, that and the fact that if we find something interesting then we would want to take our time looking , not being rushed like a herd of sheep....lol

I really like the look of the buildings at Khajuraho , although temple hopping is not our favourite thing to do the whole time , we dont mind seeing the spectacular ones. We like to see things of history and culture , old and new ....perhaps a little shopping .

I think thats enough questions for now ....i am sure i will think of a million more before the trip starts .

    Any tips are greatly appreciated

many many thanks to those who take the time to answer .

    cheers

    batt

    a few questions

On the whole it sounds like a sensible agenda, but I have some suggestions.

I would do only one night in Agra. There is Agra Fort and the Taj, and Sikandra, but it can all be pretty much done in 1 day, so stay overnight, then drive to Jaipur, stopping to see Fatehpur Sikri on the way.

I am not sure what you%26#39;re doing in Bangalore? It is not a city people pick for sightseeing. I would fly out of Mumbai to Bali. And use the 2 days saved in Bangalore in Rajasthan, perhaps at Ranthambore Tiger Sanctuary (before the tiger becomes extinct!).

Also, since Bali is a beach, I would actually skip Goa. For those 2 extra days, an overnight desert safari at Jaisalmer sounds like a better thing.

    a few questions

really long post...hv u specified the time of the year anywhere? or hv i missed out seeing it?

If not please do tell us..as this cud be the real decider as to whr u go and whr not.

thanks so much deepa , your ideas sound good .

    vibrantholidaysindia

yes sorry about the long post , but i dont like it when people go ..im coming where can i stay and what can i do .....lol we have no idea on what that person wants , so i tried to describe as best as possible .

as for the time of travel , no you didnt miss i t, i forgot about that bit ...hahaha ...MARCH next year .

    thanks to both of you

    cheers

    batt

no offence for the long post...i was trying to just say that since its long, have i missed out on reading the time of travel..:-)

Now posters will hv better ideas for you, im sure

I actually think it%26#39;s a little packed. You%26#39;ll be doing an awful lot of flying! Bear in mind that of your 2 nights in each place, much of one day will be spent either in airports/planes or cars (assuming you%26#39;re doing the Agra/Jaipur/Udaipur run by car.

In 18 nights you could do a car tour (I always say car tours because that%26#39;s what I know, others can help you with other ideas) like this:

    Day 1 arrive Delhi

    2 Delhi

    3 Fly Delhi - Varanasi

    4 Varanasi

    5 Varanasi

    6car to Khajuraho

    7 Khajuraho

    8 car to Orchha

    9 Orchha

    10 Orchha - Agra

    11 Agra - Jaipur

    12 Jaipur

13 Jaipur - Udaipur (quite a long run by car, you could fly, or break it in Pushkar?)

    14 Udaipur

    15 fly Udaipur - Mumbai

15 -18 in Mumbai and fly to Bali from there.

That feels like a reasonable pace to me, you can give or take a day in each place as per your preferences (e.g. just one night in Khajuraho and add the extra night in Mumbai...I would prefer that I think). But you would miss out on Goa and Bangalore, so I guess it depends on your priorities- where is top of your list?

    rajkumari_again

thanks so much for your reply .

within your itinarary , where would we be able to fit in Rajasthan %26amp; Jaisalmer ?

it doesnt matter if we go over the 3 weeks a little as we will have enough holidays up our sleeve to go longer .

    thank you

    batt

I would reccommend your trip this way:-

    1 Delhi

    2 Delhi

    3 Agra

    4 Ranthambore

    5 Ranthambore

    6 Jaipur

    7 Jaipur

    8 Pushkar

    9 Udaipur

    10Jodhpur

    11 Jodhpur

    12Jaislmer

    13 Bikaner

    14 Bhartpur

    15 Orcha

    16 Khajuraho

    17 Varanasi

    18 Varanasi

    19 Bodhgaya

    20 Bodhgaya-Rajgir-Nalanda-Kakolat cold water fall(one day)

Traveling alone in India. Is it safe for a young female?

I hope to be working in an orphanage outside of Kathmandu, Nepal in May for 3 weeks. I am a 21 year old American female student and will be volunteering abroad alone. I am very interested in traveling to India for a week or so since before I return home because India is so close and I have no idea when I%26#39;ll ever get the chance to visit this side of the world again. However, I am unsure as to how safe I will be. I%26#39;ve been looking at different websites and I%26#39;m getting alot of mixed messages but I generally like the advice I see on this particular sight. Does anyone have any experience with a situation similar to mine? I am primarily interested in visit New Dehli, Agra, and Jaipur. I have never travelled completely alone before but I did spend 15 days exploring France and Italy with another female friend when we were both 19. I have also been living on my own in a very large US city since I started college...so I do see myself as capable and more than willing to take this adventure into India. Any tips, stories, recommendations, etc. would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :D

Traveling alone in India. Is it safe for a young female?

I certainly dont like to travel alone here but I am not going to tell you dont do it. I know many cases of women who travelled alone in India and even for months and it麓s ok and safer than many other countries.

But it麓s not easy and you need to be careful at night.

And especially dont take any kind of drugs, alcohol or bhang lassi with any new male friends you might make.

Also, dont be afraid to be rude with men, you have to. Many guys here think that all foreign women will sleep with anyone...

Be rude, get angry, dont let them stare at you in a dirty way. Put them in their place.

Now, your trip is an easy one meaning that you dont need to take a night /sleeper train and distances are short. So, you wont have to worry about in the train/bus part of your trip. (I recommend you to take trains for your trip).

During day time there麓s nothing to worry about, do your sightseeing and go wherever you want to go, just try to keep some distance with young men, you will be better alone.

At night you will be safe wherever there are people, but streets are quite dark and although some people think that taking taxis or rickshaws at night is very dangerous I think the real danger are the cars that chase you as you walk by. Dont get near any car, day or night, just in case. That includes all cars, even police cars.

There are few cases of ';attacks'; to foreigners, India is very safe, but still you have to be careful.

And finally, be careful with the hotel people. Lock your door at night. I heard stories of hotel staff calling at 3am or knocking at your door. I dont know why they do this, I assume they think we are that easy, I dont know.. Again, this doesnt happen often but lock your door and try to go to hotels recommended by other female travellers.

You will do everything you need to do during day time but until 9pm or later streets are full of people.

I live in Delhi and I take rickshaws alone all the time at 9.30pm, but later than that I try not to..

Dont worry about the trip, dont be afraid, just be aware of these 3 things and react to any behaviour you dont like and be loud!

Dont drink with men, dont drink anything that you didnt buy if you think there麓s something suspicious about the people you are with.

    And enjoy your trip!

Traveling alone in India. Is it safe for a young female?

yes u can travel to jaipur alone. but be cautious of strangers and men who will stop u on the streets and try to be over friendly. agra too u have to be careful of what u wear on the streets..

i am from jaipur and have seen gullible young tourist falling in the trap. meeting strangers and then being drugged. if u like to meet local persons best is to go and talk to shop keepers, or go to schools----why people make friends with people walking on the street i fail to comprehend. the auto rickshaw drivers also force you to go to shops of their choice so dont get bullied by them. make yur own plans and take advise in this forum.

agra and delhi along with jaipur is called the golden triangle and they are beautiful places to see, so have fun, but be alert...

any queries u have i will be happy to answer from jaipur

    happy travelling

    shomad@sify.com

In addition to the sensible advice given earlier, I suggest you travel by plane, if you can to Jaipur-its a fairly short distance and the fare will not be too high. Travelling to Jaipur by train or bus is also possible, it%26#39;s cheaper, but can be stressful. Confirm your hotel room, and get them to send a taxi to pick you up from the airport/ railway station, with a placard bearing your name. All kinds of aggressive touts will appear at the station or airport offering you rooms/sightseeing/shopping, just avoid them.

Before you set out ensure that you carry a bottle of mineral water and a packet of biscuits with you, and avoid travelling with more currency than you need for the day.

We (two females) are also traveling in India. In general it is save, but you should take a few precautions as already mentioned.

It is also sensible if you book your hotels in advance. This will save you the hassle of guys thinking that you are looking for an adventure, if you are in fact only looking for a hotel room. Also remember that India in general is a pretty conservative country. So it is better to wear long sleeved blouses, long skirts or pants and not to show too much cleavage.

Also it is absolutely common in India, especially for women, to travel by chauffeur driven car. So do not hesitate to either take a chauffeur or taxi, even when covering short distances in the evening.

Maybe also try to previously find some people to travel with. It makes life easier, especially since Indian men like ';eve teasing';.
