Is Goa losing its reputaion with tourists?

I visited Goa in November for the first time and enjoyed it.

Since I have came back there seems to have been a negative stream of bad news.

There has long been stories of corruption in Goa and this has been compounded by the police cover up in the recent murder case.

On Sunday I heard a discusion where a newspaper editor said that Goa is a dangerous place and the statistics show it. I did not think that but this drip drip of bad news goes on.

I have also heard of comments regarding eastern europeans bringing their criminal activities to Goa as well.

Surely the authorities should be working at hard at negating such news because no doubt if this continues the tourism economy of Goa will be in grave danger.

If you enjoyed it the first time you went, don%26#39;t listen to negative thoughts of people that may not be as tolerent as normal. follow your heart, go again, and enjoy!!

there are people that could give you reasons not to go to any destination on earth!!

Is Goa losing its reputaion with tourists?

Hello,

we got back monday and the goa mafia were present at vagator beach where they went around all the sellers taking money off them.Goa is corrupt as are all 3rd world countries. The tourist police were on the beach on the thursday before we left in Calangute(i think they should be re-named the anti-tourist police) they made all the beach shacks take half the sunbeds away and Bobthebus you may be interested to know that saritas was no exception, they made Sam take half of his away and the chairs at the front, his sign and the front of the beach shack or they threatened to knock the whole thing down and he had to pay them for the pleasure. Also the shacks that were encroaching were illegal as they had no license and everything was removed, however 2 days later they were up and running again.

steve

hello steve,

hope it was a good one for you and yours!!

i think you hit the nail on the head with ';anti tourist police'; lol.

last time we were at seritas, philip wanted to double the amount of sunbeds, which we weren%26#39;t too pleased about, mainly selfish reasons. we like it nice and quiet, thats the main reason for us to go there. but, only havig 5 sunbeds is a bit drastic, and will severely restrict their income, and contribute to unemployment.

how were sam and philip and to boys of course? OK i hope.

Hello Bob,

Sam had some medical problems when we were there,i never really got to the bottom of it(his business really) but Phillip said it was something alcohol related,he had a big plaster on one side of his face and his foot in bandages and wrapped in a black plastic bag for some reason but he looked much better by the time we left. Phillip was Phillip, trying to get what he could out of you and realising who he was talking to adding ';just joking'; at the end of his tale of woes.Marco and Sara are still there and there son Icram joined them for our last week,i like them, they are a lovely couple.John the new lad was nice, quite amusing seeing him try to shoo away the sellers/beggars,he is too nice to be as abrupt as Phillip is with them.So overall, yes we had a great time.I%26#39;ll post a review this weekend probably. all the best.

Hi there

Just before we went this year we were looking for something on the internet it was statistics for crimes involving tourists in lots of places when you seen the stats for Goa compared with Spain or Greece they are very minimal. The media and the british love something to moan about and un safe Goa is perfct for them to get there teeth into. Wish I could remember site the info was on will ask my Mum to see if she can remember and will post it, it was a governmet website though

Stacey

Let me put it this way..... I can walk down any road in Goa and feel safe at any time of day, now can I walk down a road in this country and feel safe?

I agree Goa does have some issues, but they are so small compared to most countries. The Police are corrupt I agree, but don%26#39;t give them a reason to harass you and you%26#39;re fine.

The majority of corruption is between the locals, I say locals in a very loose way. People come down during tourist seasons from the mountains to claim there stake in the tourist market. The tourists never see this, it is the genuine local Goan people who lose out.

They%26#39;re not stupid they know tourists bring alot of money into the country and would rarely jeopardise this.

My worst fear is the British lager louts who have started to come over.......

Enjoy Goa, it%26#39;s the best place on this planet!

I agree Stacey,

I know that poor young girl Scarlett was obviously murdered in Anjuna but how many fatal stabbings were there in the uk while i was away? I still feel safer in Goa at night than i do in a uk town on a friday/saturday night. I think young girls in particular just need to be sensible in Goa and not leave themselves vunerable as unfortunately there are bad people everywhere in the world but in my opinion less in Goa than there are in the uk.

steve

HI STEVE.

thanks for the info on the guys at seritas. shame about sam though. we think he%26#39;s had a bit of a problem for a few years.

we like marco a sara too, really nice couple. probably got a shedful of our towels, and everyone else%26#39;s. we usually give them our when we leave.
