Hi

Kanyakumari is about 87km from Kovalam.

Depending on which tour guide you use will depend on what you will see and do for your excursion.

My friend Lenic, who owns Cosmic Travel (located behind Palm Restuarant and not to be confused with Cosmos) does one such trip:-

CAPE COMORIN TOUR

Full day visit to the Land%26#39;s End of India at Cape Comorin. Drive to the Cape (Kanyakumari) 87km/3hr drive. Enroute vist Padmanabhapuram Palace (the Palace of origin of Travancore Dynasty). A Palace made entirely of wood. Visit Suchindram Temple, the only Hindu Temple in this region (Kerala) that allows non-Hindus to enter. At the Cape take a boat to Vivekananada Rock memorial, dedicated to the great Indian reformer, Swami Vivekananda. Also a chance to visit the Gandhi Memorial and see the sunset.

Is it worth it? I found it very interesting BUT everyone is different so cannot really answer that. Some say it is a good trip, others say that the journey is too long, hot, and bumpy.

Lenic has other excursions all of which can be booked before hand with a deposit.

Hope the above helps.

We booked a private car from the travel agent opposite the Uday Samudra. The journey takes about 2.5 - 3 hours but we enjoyed the scenery.

Worth it? We enjoyed it and it was the only proper trip we did but it may not be for everyone. It is a long drive after all.

I can%26#39;t remember how much it cost though.

We did this trip by booking a taxi for the day. just used the driver we had the previous day and let him organise the day. I think the car was around 1500rps then admission to temples and lunch on top. It is a long day around 2.5 hours each way but you do get to see things away from the tourist track, or, at least, join the Indian tourists.

enjoy Kerala

I did it in December by Car. It can be too hectic to do it in a day. The palace is worth seeing on the way but it takes time 2+ hours. Also, the Vivekananda rock closes around 4 PM and sunset is around 6-6.30 So you will be back by 9-10PM at night.

So I stayed overnight in Kanyakumari. There is Hotel Sea View right across from Jetty to Vivekananda rock. Its nice clean 3 star hotel and you can walk to Jetty. Its pretty reasonable compared to Kerala hotels.

If you want to do it leisurely I would leave in the morning. Visit Palace. Then go to Kanyakumari. See the Rock, Vivekananda Memorial and watch sunset in the evening. Watch sunrise from Hotel rooftop next day and drive back in the morning.

There is Sunset beach that gets crowded due to local tourist. So go early to get a good spot.

Thanks very much for all your advice, I think we will do it and book privately.
