drug trade goa

Have a look at this article in todays Times of India paper, headline Drug trade thriving in Goa due to Peddler/cop nexus.

Makes you wonder who you are sitting next to in the bars!!!

They need a good shake up, but not much hope of that I bet.

Don%26#39;t do drugs and got no interest what so-ever.

Any-one who wants to, then that%26#39;s up to them. But don%26#39;t complain if you get caught. With the recent tragedy at Anjuna, hopefully the police will step up a notch and start looking at tackling the problem and be seen to be doing so.

The point of the article was the corruption in the police and now apparently the locals and the Russian and Israeli connections in the bars and shacks where we want a pleasant nonthreatening environment for our (expensive) holidays.

Perhaps I am being a bit naieve, is this to be expected anywhere in the world now?

Hi beach

Thats what I ment. The police need to take a long look at themselves. How on earth are they going to be able to tackle something they themselves are involved in. They need to show that they are getting their own books in order and showing that they ARE tackling this problem. Like you I want to be able to sit at a shack with a beer and know I%26#39;m not going to get pestered or put up with the peddling etc. But I don%26#39;t think that%26#39;s going to happen for a long time. Luckily I%26#39;ve never been bothered by any-one out there with the stuff. Although I have seen it in a couple of places After all it is a place the hippy world live. On that one enough said.

I have not long come back from goa,i was booked up for next year but have now canceled,i had a nice holiday but i saw a few things happen which has put me off going again,i cant go into it on this forum but all i can say the goverment has got to sort them out,or goa we all love will be know more.

I think beachfreak has got it about right, a good setting like Goa is going to have a drug (and drink) problem anywhere in the world. Just got back, been reading the Goan Times most days for the last month, during which Panjim police station was physically attacked after they hospitalised the Mayor. However,I think the problem is more complex than simply saying ';The police are corrupt';.

It seems that good pensionable public sector jobs are valuable things that must be paid for in cash, that someone may have a position of authority but be incompetent or corrupt, but at the same time be unsackable because of his connections. Goonas ';gangsters'; can attain Al Capone fame. A Goan Times story told of an illegal gambling operation being successfully raided by the police only to see the gang released after they made indignant cell phone calls to the ';Minister'; who then told the police to let them go.

This could be seen to be ';the local way to do things'; (if you ignore the vigilante lynchings and beatings which are commonplace, probably to make sure the guilty do get punished) but, when you bring in strangers with money then you see villages with water only 6 hours a day whilst a nearby spec ';investment'; development is watering its lawn.

Goa has had tourism for 40 years and still can%26#39;t get rid of the rubbish, provide 24/7 water or electricity, surface the roads or show any interest in solar power.

India is the way it is. I%26#39;ve just come back to Britain the way it is. I know where I%26#39;d prefer to be.

We have been reading the Indian press too, and it%26#39;s good to have all your views to ponder over.

I think you have summed it up well, ie. enjoy your holiday, don%26#39;t get mentally involved with the bad stuff because you can%26#39;t change it, and come home and get on with life in England.

On that note, am counting down to 29th March to go back to those lovely beaches. Luckily down South we have not seen any evidence of druggy stuff, but often wonder if the Ruskies are genuine holidaymakers or something else??

I think I am paranoid and need a holiday???!!!!!!!

Love the forum discussions, keeps us revved up for holidays.,
